Standards of Care

At Parkside Animal Hospital our Motto is more than just words. It motivates everything we do. The standard of care we maintain for your pet is the same standard of care we practice with our own pets.

We believe in practicing good medicine by keeping 'what is best for your pet' as our number one priority.

Annual Exam:

Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of an annual physical examination. Thorough check-ups and preventive care can help alleviate serious health problems. We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best.

Pain Medicine:

We practice comprehensive Pain Management for all surgical procedures or anytime your pet may be experiencing pain due to illness or injury.

Often, it has been said that animals don't feel pain the same way humans do. Research now shows that animals do feel pain the same, but react to pain differently. In other words, they instinctively try to hide their symptoms of pain. Pain management allows your pet to recover more comfortably and quickly.

In Surgery pain management includes pain medication post-op, during and after surgery. It also includes pain medication to be taken home and administered by the owner after a surgical procedure.

For other procedures, illness and injury pain medication is administered as needed both in Hospital and at home by the owner.

Pre-Anesthetic Testing :

Pre-Anesthetic testing describes a blood test that is done before your pet is sedated for surgery or any other procedure. These tests provide information about the liver, kidneys, blood sugar levels and the ability of the red blood cells to carry oxygen. Many subtle problems can only be detected through CBC and blood chemistries.

Unlike humans, pets cannot tell us when they do not feel well. As a result of animals' instinct to protect themselves, oftentimes sick pets will "hide" their illness. Therefore, an animal's appearance of health may be misleading. To understand your pet's overall health it is crucial to derive additional information through testing prior to anesthesia. If the results of the blood tests are within normal ranges, we can proceed with confidence knowing the anesthetic risk is minimized. On the other hand, if the results are not within the normal ranges, we may alter the anesthetic procedure. In some cases, we may proceed as planned, yet provide medical support during and after the procedure to ensure your pet's health. In other cases, the test abnormalities may be significant enough to postpone the procedure in order to monitor and medically treat your pet. Prior to anesthesia and surgery, we perform a thorough evaluation of your pet's age, breed, general health, physical exam, and laboratory tests. Then, based on the individual needs of each patient and the type of surgery or procedure that will be performed, we choose from many types of sedatives, local and general anesthetics, and pain control medications. Our goal is to insure your pet is as safe and comfortable as possible.

Laser Surgery:

The use of a Co2 Laser can greatly enhance your pet's comfort. Studies have shown that the use of a laser during surgery will significantly reduce pain, bleeding, and post-operative swelling.

Heated Surgery Table and Recovery:

Heat support is a major part of safe surgery and rapid recovery. All surgeries are performed on a heated surgery table. Blankets and other warming devices are provided during recovery.

Med Rx Machine:

Our MedRx machine allows us to see deep down inside the ear canal. Often the Doctor finds debris, infection and/or masses (?) too deep for them to see with the usual instruments. Early diagnosis of all the conditions increases your pet's chance for a full recovery. The medrx machine also allows the Doctor to clear the eardrum of debris and infuse the ear drum with medicine which helps kill the bacteria and yeast that grows deep in the canal causing chronic ear infections.

Dental Cleaning and Dental X-ray:

When a diagnosis of dental disease and a recommendation for dental cleaning is made you can be assured that we have a state of the art dental machine and tools to aid us in cleaning your pets teeth and gums.

The bacteria that grows in your pets mouth causing gum disease can spread to your pet's heart, liver and kidneys. It is important then, once a diagnosis of dental disease is made to bring your pet in for a dental as soon as possible. A common question is, "Does my pet have to be put under anesthesia?" The answer to that question is "Yes". Cleaning the teeth requires the pet to keep their mouth open and be still for the entire procedure. General Anethesia is the only way to accomplish those things.

Sometimes it is necessary to extract one or more teeth. A Dental x-ray can show the Dr. where the root is and what condition the root is in. This aids her in being able to pull the tooth with minimal risk to the jaw or surrounding teeth.

Because the teeth are part of the jaw line, once a tooth is pulled the jaw around that area is at risk to break. Consil is a white powder that when hardens acts as a support to the bone-giving it the strength and support the jaw bone needs.

Spay and Neuter:

We recommend that you spay or neuter your pet soon after their last set of vaccinations. Spaying and neutering not only helps decrease the unwanted pet population it also prevents serious health problems. Research shows us that an unaltered male and female are at higher risk for certain types of cancer. Neutering your pet also reduces some behavioral problems associated with male dogs as they mature.

Preventive Care:

We believe that preventive care is the cornerstone of good health for your pet. Studies show that animals instinctively hide pain and other symptoms of illness. By the time symptoms begin to show your pet may be a lot sicker than you would expect. Blood tests, urine test, x-rays at appropriate ages and times are all good diagnostic tools available to monitor your pet's health. Particularly, these tests are important as your pet becomes older. Remember, our pets age faster than we do. If you were to test your senior pets blood every year, it is about the same as testing your blood every 6-7 years. A lot can change in that time. The best chance for recovery or maintenance of illness and disease is always early detection.

We cannot talk about preventive care without mentioning yearly exams and vaccinations. The yearly exam is essential in maintaining your pets health. Pets age faster than humans and much more can happen in one pet year than a human year. Once a pet matures and becomes a Senior pet (6-7 yrs.) diagnostic blood work and urine tests are important to monitor your pets health.

Vaccinations are given in a series to kittens and puppies. The annual shots begin one year after your pets first Rabies vaccination. These vaccinations help to prevent disease in your pet. Often, these diseases can be fatal and are always dangerous and costly to treat. The Dr. will evaluate your pet each year during their annual exam and determine the best vaccine schedule

Diet and Nutrition:

A healthy diet of good nutrition is a good tool for building a healthy life for your pet. Your pet will need a special formulation of proteins, vitamins and starches to help them grow as they mature. Once mature they need to maintain that healthy lifestyle with a food that continues to give them the right amount of nutrients. This good foundation of health will help your pet be as strong as possible if sickness or disease strikes. Sometimes, our pets may need a prescription diet to help combat various diseases or conditions. These foods are specially formulated to give the type of nutrition that will aid in your pets recovery or maintaining his/her health. Please be sure to read the educational material available concerning the specific food the Doctor recommends for your pet. It will help you understand how its specific nutritional formula will aid in your pets health.

We hope this helps you be prepared to make some of the decisions you might be faced with throughout the life of your pet. Please feel free to ask questions about any aspects of your pet's health care. This standard of care is very important to us, as is your concern for your pet. Please let us know if we can help in any way.
